We live in a society today which does not expect much of their young. Often, we are looked down upon and treated like children. Nothing much is expected until we are out of college, over twenty-five, and even then those years are seen as throw away years. With the responsibility placed upon them, people train accordingly. No wonder with such low expectations, so little is received.

However, this view of thinking was not always the case. Let’s look into the past to see some of the great achievements of previous generations:

  1. Alexander the Great became king at 20 and began his conquests of Persia at Age 21. By age 30, Alexander had conquered most of the known world.

Battle of Issus (100 BC) Philoxenus of Eretria

  1. Buffalo Bill became a legendary Indian fighter at age 11. By age 14, he joined the Pony Express riding over 100 miles a day and faced many dangerous hazards. By age 21, he received the name Buffalo Bill for killing 4,280 buffalo in 18 months with bullseye accuracy.

  1. George Washington was fatherless at age 11. However, such a setback did not stop him. Despite never receiving a formal education, became an official county land surveyor at 17, led as Lieutenant Colonel an expedition against the French in the French-Indian War, and owned thousands of acres of land by age 25.

George Washington in the Uniform of a Colonel in the Virginia militia (1772) Charles Wilson Peale. This painting is 18 years after he first fought the French in 1754.

  1. Orphaned at 12, and born outside the colonies on the Island of Nevis, Alexander Hamilton served as Washington’s aide de camp, right hand man, in our War for Independence by age 20 . By 32, Hamilton served as this nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, personally building most of our government from scratch.

  1. At age 13, Andrew Jackson served in the continental army and at was taken prisoner. While in custody, Jackson was slashed in both the face and hand by a British officer. Scared for life and orphaned at age 14, Jackson would become a public prosecutor for the lawless Western Frontier by 21.

Andrew Jackson, unfinished (1845) Thomas Sully

  1. Louisa May Alcott author of classics like Little Women and Little Men had her poems published by age 16, and a novel by 18. Alcott she was read across the country by age 19.

  1. In her early teens The Virgin Mary took on the daunting task of the being the mother of God. Bearing this heavy burden, she would have to watch her son Jesus Christ be crucified by the world.

Madonna del Prato (1506) Raphael

All except Mary, who was born without original sin, are no different than any of us. They are not greater than us, superior in one manner or another, for the very same blood that runs through them runs through you. Just as they accomplished great things so can you.

This country must believe in the young once again. You can accomplish mighty tasks, rise up and bear heavy burdens, and transform your lives to become the men and women the quality of which has not been seen for generations .

It is time to reject the low expectations of this secular age, and advance to perform great exploits of life. Do what others never believed could done.

But first, one must toil and labor on the battlefield which we call life. We must harden ourselves in the crucible of this world. We must break off the waste and the mend all the cracks to forge from mere rock a character as pure as gold.

Now, the time is more important than ever before. Since the time of its founding, this country has never sunk so low. It needs strong men and women to carry on the torch of liberty. If not us then who, and if not now, then when? I know you have it in you to rise to such an occasion, but you must first believe in yourself.

We can fix our lives, we can fix this school, and we can fix this country. You have it in you to become the person you were always destined to be. Reach out and grasp it, never let go.

Another Brave Patriot

While strutting through the school to post some more fliers, I saw the mark of another rebellious soul out there, and so I was compelled to write. The Outing Club is making a few bold, “unsanctioned” moves with their posters (This is not a designated posting location). Seems like someone is being a little naughty 😏. Courage is contagious. Be bold, be brave, and in doing so be an inspiration for others.

After seeing such brave acts, I must say it does seem quite tempting to attend. I am not a very good dancer, so I hope people don’t make fun of me.

Reclaim the UC!

Another glorious quest has begun: fix the Clayton University Center. For the amount of money we pay for this school, the standards are not adequate. Often there are missing utensils, the Clutch-and-Go is unstocked, and there are no options for the weekends.

Please show the QR code to others. The more people we can get on the survey the better. I have gum for you if you do!

Also, I finally know who is taking down all our fliers: the police. How do I know this? Well, I just received an email from Officer Schiffer condemning our illegal postings. These nefarious actions are again being reported to Dean of Students. Who knew that trying fix the school would lead to you getting expelled. My days it seems are numbered, however I am a man of my word, so whatever happens, I will always keep fighting for you.

Make no mistake, however, an attack on me is an attack on you. They wish to treat us like dogs and tell us to silent and shut up, all the while taking our money. It’s about time we stop tolerating this nonsense by becoming the men and women we were always destined to be.

Always remember, no matter what they throw at us in this materialistic age, they cannot stop us, for our power is not of this world.

“The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever.”

- Isaiah 40:8

Your humble servant, Francisco Pereira
